Fazenda Boa Vista is located in Ibiraci, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and is managed by Anderson Monteiro de Andrade, a 47-year-old, second-generation coffee grower. The farm is huge, 900 hectares in total, but only consists of 72 hectares dedicated to growing coffee. It sits at an elevation of 1,100 m.a.s.l, with around 150,000 coffee trees in production.
Coffee growing in Brazil is a whole different business, but Anderson managed to maintain it as an “all-hands-on-deck” family enterprise.
Together with his 3 siblings, they formed a partnership with the inherited land from their father, and began building Fazenda Boa Vista into its current state. With a total of 13 children across all the siblings, they hope eventually that all family members engage in the farm (so far, 3 of them are fully devoted). Nowadays, Fazenda Boa Vista is growing at a steady pace, with the siblings wanting to adopt a regenerative agriculture approach, and innovating with new post-harvest management techniques.
The family values sustainable practices, minimizing chemical fertilizers in favor of biological products and composting, promoting soil health and biodiversity. Looking to the future, Anderson hopes to pass on his passion for coffee to his family’s next generation, exploring regenerative agriculture to keep their practices progressive and eco-friendly. - from The Coffee Quest
